Math. It’s one of those subjects that many hate and struggle with. As I write this, I wonder if students end up hating math because they struggle with it? Hmmm….
Love it or hate it, we want our students to be successful with it, and although there are a lot of strategies that can help with this, one of the sure-fire ways to ensure learning is to increase engagement. One such way to make it fun is by playing games. This is why we were very excited for the opportunity to review Sunya – The Magic and Wonder of Math and Science Adding & Subtracting by Sunya Publishing.
The Product: Sunya – The Magic and Wonder of Math and Science Adding & Subtracting
Sunya – The Magic and Wonder of Math and Science Adding & Subtracting is a great way to practice those simple addition and subtraction problems. It comes with a comprehensive instruction manual, 60 numbered playing cards, 30 math and science fact and riddle cards, and a number line.
The instruction manual not only explains all the rules but also gives variations on the games to keep your child engaged and interested. Furthermore, it gives additional ideas on how to expand your child’s learning in math and logic with “Math Magic” and “More Amazing Facts and Riddles.”
How To Play
Essentially, a simple addition or subtraction equation is displayed in the middle using the number cards. The goal is for the players to adjust the equation, while keeping it true, by adding their own cards. The player to rid themselves of all their cards first shouts ‘Sunya’ and is able to draw a math and science fact and riddle card, which he teaches to the rest of the group. Additional rules add interest and fun to the game.
Sunya – The Magic and Wonder of Math and Science Adding & Subtracting is perfect for those younger students who need to practice adding and subtracting equations under 10: The number cards have numbers zero through nine, so the highest addition equation will equal nine, and the most difficult subtraction question will start with nine.
Learning Beyond the Game
Sunya – The Magic and Wonder of Math and Science Adding & Subtracting can be used with younger students who aren’t quite computing equations independently yet. In the Instruction Manual, additional activities for younger children can be found. Activities include the following:
- Number recognition
- Number to quantity correlation
- Counting up to 9
- Sequencing 0-9
- Number Matching
- Making equations with objects
- Making equations with numbers
- Completing the equation
How We Used It
My kids liked this game. It was a nice break from the repetition of normal math drills. ZooKid, my first grader, caught on to the rules quickly and was able to play fairly independently right away. Princess Super Kitty, my preschooler, hasn’t learned equations yet, so she started practicing her number sense with sequencing.
I think Sunya – The Magic and Wonder of Math and Science Adding & Subtracting is a great way to practice those initial equations in a fun and interesting way. I will say that reading the rules for the first time was a little daunting. I did have to reference them occasionally the first few times we played the game, but that is true of most new games. I do plan on incorporating this game as a supplementary learning tool when Princess Super Kitty learns to add and subtract.
For older students learning multiplication and division, Sunya Publishing also offers Sunya – The Magic and Wonder of Math and Science Multiplication & Division, complete with all new math and science fact and riddle cards. Check it out here.
